Everything I need to know I learned from listening to Chrome. Well, maybe not *everything*, but an awful lot. If I'm picking five bands they're in there, no question.

Their best stuff still sounds incredible."You've been duplicated" would be on my desert island mixtape. I love that video = it's still a brilliant lo-fi vision of futurosity...like Goddard's "Alphaville", but shot on some clunky early 80s video-camera borrowed from the local univerity media dept. With "Clockwork Orange" references lol. It's still an amazingly valid vision of a future-past, one that's still worth exploring. They were cool as fuck.

For like a year and a half the only Chrome I could find were the original lps of Half Machine Lip Moves and Alien Soundtracks at Record Collector for like fifty bucks each -- I used to *dream* about what those albums would sound like long before I ever heard them, and then I finally convinced a clerk to let me listen to 'em there in the store -- between those dreams, the back-to-back cd on Rough Trade, and the reorganized version from the Chrome Box, I still don't really know which song is on which album, but apart from being so amazingly cool and different they were one of the few bands who actually worked for my on that punk "anybody can do what we do" level -- definitely one of the critical steps between "i'm just messing around in my bedroom" and "i'm a fucking *band*, man". Plus, those guys were all 24 hour a day weirdoes. Cool as fuck is absolutely right.
