Thanks to Erkki from the PHinnWeb site and blog (your one-stop shop for all things cool n Finnish-flavour'd) for asking me to do my Top-Ten recent faves as part of his on-going monthly chart-list. Man, I love doing stuff like this!

Yep, so a fistful of musical things, old and new...tho, of course, I couldn't resist putting a couple of 10cc-related tunes in my Ten.

The latest Kek's Wyrd World - er, I mean Lol's Lysergyc World - swivels into view.

This time I'm focusing in on the fabulous Portuguese band Gala Drop, whose incoming debut album has been giving me a massive amount of pleasure over the last week or so. It really is wonderful.

A spacious fusion of Kraut, Dub, African-flavoured percussion, Tropicalia, Exotica, early 80s NY stalwarts like Arthur Russell/Liquid Liquid, etc that doesn't sound like some sort of Hipster car-crash! How is that possible?

Go'n have a couple listens and soak it up. The band are trying to sort out some distro deal at the moment. But if you like their stuff I'm sure you can buy copies of the album directly off them.

They're touring Europe during Sept/Oct (tho sadly not the UK) - I recommend you go see them live.

Following up from the post below...I'm thinking that Andrew Gold (Gouldman's partner in Wax) was probably a beard substitute - an ersatz Godley. With G & C's departure from Tha Cee, there was a beard deficit w/in the group. A Beard Vacuum, as it were.

I believe that teaming up with Gold was an attempt to bring a beard back into the song-writing equation; to summon up the special song-writing magic again. And for a while it worked!

I wonder if there's a bread-related algorhythm that can be used to measure song-writing success?

I always assumed Andrew Gold was Jewish. Here's what he says on the topic: "Many people think I'm Jewish, but I'm not, at least not by the official standard (Mom's not, Dad's only part on his Dad’s side...and he was raised Lutheran AND VERY lapsed.)"

Sounds like he's about 1/32nd Jewish, whereas I'm about 1/64th. I'd like to up my personal Jewish Quotient. It strikes me that's the way to go. That and a beard.

I may have to adopt some older False Relatives.
