READ BY DAWN #3

The third volume of the horror antho Red by Dawn turns up with one of my short stories in tow, dragging it across the grass by its hair while blood leaks from a jagged cut on its throat.

Yep, my contributor's copy turned up this morning an' mighty fine it is too. You really should check it out. No, really. Especially all you Old Folk who remember nicking yr dad's copy of the Pan Book of Horror Stories.

My own contribution is deliriously off-colour...and kinda grotesquely surreal. Ah, fuck it - it's pretty damn wild, actually! It's called "In The Cinema-Tree with Orbiting Heads." Form an orderly queue, ambulance-chasers.

Available from Adèle and those wonderful folks at Bloody Books (an imprint of Beautiful Books).

Or from Amazon. See how easy it is to buy these things: just one click...g'wan!

Can't help feeling that comment is aimed directly at me. And I just bought a load of books from the local library in their "fill a bag for a quid" mega clear-out. Currently engrossed in Philip K. Dick's Gameplayers Of Titan. But will endevour to check dis shit too...

"Can't help feeling that comment is aimed directly at me" - not at all, Nick. It was actually aimed at myself lol. I used to 'borrow' my Dad's Westerns and the occasional horror book when he wasn't looking...then I started buying 5p s/hand copies of The Pan Horror series from Bonus Books, Yeovil in late 60s/early 70s and took them into school to read in quiet time in between SF binges...

Can't go wrong with Phil Dick, tho.

ah well you see my old man had nearly a complete set of Pan Horrors, which i would often dip into. some heavy stuff in there. i remember one particular story involved a gay having all his limbs surgically amputated and then being violently buggered. in fact now i think of it the story was called "Kowlongo Plaything" and i just googled it. some guy on a message board sez:

"Don't know if it's an endorsement or not but Kowlongo Plaything was one of those stories that made me seriously consider giving up on the Pans as being just a bit too unremittingly vile, pointless, and with no redeeming features (like entertainment value) "

Lol! link here

actually it wasn't a 'gay', just a 'guy'.
typo or maybe a freudian slip, lol!

Actually, I remember being particularly sickened by a story in which a guy had his limbs systematically removed, then his eyes and guts...I think I was about 12 or 13 when I read it...that on'e stayed with me down through the years...wonder if it's the same story...

Don't remember the buggering tho - lol!

Nah - just checked the link and it's not, tho that story sounds pretty mental. The Pans I read were earlier in the series...didn't realise there were that many...

man that series just kept on relentlessly. i rememeber my dad had a mixture of old editions (the sort you prob read) and newer ones with the re-jigged design and alternate cover illustrations.

now i just remembered Norm Kaufman's"Experiment With H20" from vol. 16. Murderer gets his comeuppence when the family of one of his victims boil him alive. the bit where his genitals disolve stuck in my head for a looong time. jesus chrsit...i hope the stuff in this Read By dawn book is a bit tamer. Don't think i can deal with that kinda shit anymore..
