MAGIC AND MECHANICA

Yaaaay: so anyway, my short story "Mondo Baroque" has been accepted for the forthcoming US-based Magic & Mechanica anthology, which'll be appearing late this year/early next year, I think, as part of both a paperback and also an e-book electronic compilation...

My recent contribution to late last year's Chimeraworld #4 antho was fairly experimental-ish, but this is a more straightforward/linear, commercial piece of darkish, High Fantasy...regular readers will be well aware that I'm a fan of Moorcockish New wave Fantasy and 30s-ish Weird Tales tropes, so expect something in that vein, but remixed for more of a post-millennial sensibility: a blend of heroic hack n slash shit with alchemechanical weirdness...the theme for the anthology is a mulch of trad. magic and clunky mechanismo, so there'll be plenty of steam-punk conjuring and stuff...my own contribution is based in a lost Post-Renaissance quasi-Italio microverse chocful of art n architecture n alchemistry n robotic women...still working on a few minor edits over the next few days, but this is a 7000+ worder that will hopefully delight and surprise a few people who (like myself) don't much like modern Fantasy...no elves in it, I guarantee! Anyway, more info about the story and the antho as things firm up n take shape...

The title and the main character are something that I originally came up with somewhere betwn 15 and 20 years ago, so kinda cool for me to finally lay that to rest at last. I'd love to do something more w/ him at some point in the future, but for now I'm kinda content about this...I feel like I've finally connected back to my 14yr old self who used to sit for hours in his bedroom with a knackered 1910 type-writer (that my Dad bought me in a junkshop across the road) tryin' to write like Fritz Leiber...

So suffice to say, I'm chuffed as fuck about this one, and hopefully some of you Old School Fantasy Freaks who enjoy more'ova an idea-based Grant Morrison-esque take on Wyrd Fiction will dig it too. This ain't the quasi-Nordic-based thang that The X (Hi Ya!) kindly helped me research late last year: that's still buried in Publisher Limbo, but will hopefully surface at some point...meanwhile, there's a bunch of other stuff doing the rounds (incl. various book proposals) that are slowly/finally coming together that I'll hopefully be able to tell ya about at some point...
