CARETAKER POSTSCRIPT

By coincidence, V/VM aka The Caretaker emailed yesterday with a few thoughts on his 365 project n stuff, which makes for a short but interesting postscript to Nick's own piece.

He says (slightly edited version): "Last year for sure was real hard work for me, creating every day took its toll big time on my body for starters, as when you're ill you simply cannot rest up and say "Well I'll just do things when I am better"... a killer project for sure that one...

I was listening back to some of the audio too and some of it is actually pretty good, which suprised me... when I was making everything I seldom had a chance to listen back to what I made in any kind of way, except for when I was making it...

Some of it suprised me, it really did... sure, most of it would be better with a few more hours spent on it here and there, but as a project it's something I wanted to do for such a long time and I did it. It will be interesting to see if anyone else is mad enough to do that for a year or maybe longer to top trump me, but they won't find it easy - that's for sure...

I also checked out your new beat track, this is what I had in mind for that project, people making things from what is there and having some fun with it -- music should be fun and these days too much of it is purely based around a hard sale and you feel like you are being conned by people, so it's good to give away in the hope people will use things... even if people seldom do use it.

What you did sounds great for a couple of hours work...I think the only giveaway that it's not old is the kick drum as it sounds a little bit too new for that old sound ;-) It's all about the kicks and snares new beat, once you get them licked you're away and right back in belgium '89..."

(Kek: Thanks for the kind words, Vee. Yeah, when I've got some time I'd like maybe to 'research' the snare-drums, bass sounds, etc and have a go at a 'proper' Neo-New Beat track...to actually maybe try and get the atmosphere fairly right and get some half-decent production on it...but I'm just an enthusiastic but half-arsed amateur...)

Vee: "Anyway thanks for the support through 2006 which was the toughest year for me ever in terms of work, and small mentions here and there really helped me motivationally to finish things up and not to give up because, as you can imagine, it was a really lonely process doing that work...

"This year things will be easier...there is a double vinyl Caretaker album being made which will come out of Belgium at some point this calendar year (recording for it will start soon)...I think it will be a little lighter than the boxset but you never know how it will turn out until it turns out...

Also, I will release a real limited Caretaker vinyl as I am really trying to go the other way now...after a year of giveaway audio, this year I want to release things which are impossible to find and that have no on-line presence.. so I will keep you in the loop for all these things...

Well anyway, everyone here has been throwing up since new year and I feel pretty fucked too, so am gonna sign out...hopefully 2007 sees you restored to full health, and, damn, postcards from Maurice Engelen... I'm so jealous on that one..."

LOL! And good luck with your new job as IDM arse-kicker...
