NEW FALL VINYL

This just in from the distributors:

"The Fall vinyl has gone back to 5th March – due to Mark E Smith wanting it remastered. He wasn’t happy with the mastering (2 days before call off!), so they’ve had to remake them from scratch. So gone back 3 weeks. CD is still out on 12th February, and has called off..."

Gaaaaah.

MES involved at the mastering stages always makes me smile - was it not his insistance that the final master that John Leckie produced for Bend Sinister should be scrapped because it sounded completly different than the 3rd-generation D90 cassette he had been listening to as a reference mix .. in the end the LP was mastered from the cassette - and the parting of the ways of Lecjie and Smiffy - always wondered why that LP was somewhat muddy !!

MES - god bless the lad - was going to buy the CD actually - but might well wait and see how different the LP ends up sounding ...

Heard a few demos of the thing this week - and it certainly sounds a mixed old bag - back to normal for them me thinks !!

heard the CD from one of the blogs... certainly a mixed bag but there's some excellent stuff on it as always...

I always liked Leckie's production...Magazine, early H. League, Empires and Dance, etc v. crisp and shiney, but w/ punch...but I can see why MES tired of it, tho: that period of The Fall sounds the most dated now (biggish 80s snare sound, upfront keys, etc wh/ doesn't fit with The Fall...), but it was a Record Label attempt to try'n cross them over and get some catchy pop hits...you can't blame label/producer for trying, after all it is a business....

"Bend Sinister" is one of my favourite FALL LPs: it got me back into the band after 3 or 4 years away...after I heard it I went out and bought everything I'd missed and haven't looked back....

Strangely, despite MES's attempts at auto-sabotage, I do like the sound of it (maybe because I never heard Leckies original mix; wonder what that was like...); there's lots of muffled sonic detail hidden low in the mix (I listened to it once, 20 years ago, coming down on mushrooms and thought I heard loads of MES cassette-tape interventions buried in the bottom-end...I expect someone'll do a cleaned-up re-master at some point and I'll hate it cos it sounds 'wrong'...

yep - I love the Leckie stuff too - but for sure it does not suit what they are these days - but ya got some way to go to beat the psych-out production and tune that is Pat Trip Dispenser - for sure right up in my top 10 fave fall tracks - and Leckie at his best !
