SVEN!

Back from another session of hardkore dentistry in Poole this afternoon. My hectic international jet-set life-style (and a pushy PA/PR assistant nagging me to do phone-interviews to promote my forthcoming Avant-Gothik Western "Sargasso" and my children's book "Kill Neil Gaiman", er, sorry...I, uh, mean "Billy the Bean" (the story of a wayward magical haricot)) meant that I only had a few minutes spare for shopping, but luckily I somehow managed to score a stash of Corgi edition Sven Hassel novels to read in the limo on the way home:

Also grabbed a couple of 70's Lin Carter-edited anthologies of forgotten Edwardian/1920s fantasy writers. Yum!

- pulp fiction!!!

btw Sven is a swedish name, not a german one- perhaps fittingly enough, as during WW2 the officially "neutral" Sweden had a nasty habit of, err, STOPPING refugees from their occupied neighbour-countries and sending them BACK over the border, into the arms of the Nazi brigades...
(whom they often sympathised/collaborated with...)

my granpa was interned in a Nazi labour camp when the germans occupied Nor***, he was a teacher who refused to join the Quisling Party wot the occupants forced every state employee to do so...he just managed to escape over the border to Sweden, but NOT thanks to swedish police, who tried to catch him and dliver him back to the nazis...

more bizarrely, it was actually Swedish eugenics that inspired Hitler and his chums to polish their own "racial purity" ideals-
the Swedes were first to sterilise "unwanted elements" (travellers, gypsies, the retarded) from the 1920's/1930's onwards, desperate to eliminate the ones who didn't fit into their "pure" social-democratic Utopia...

Yikes!...so that's why there's no litter in the streets of Stockholm any more. Did I imagine it or did I read somewhere the Swedes were still pursuing eugenics type policies and programs into the 50s/60s...forced sterilisation/'special schools'/etc? Nah, surely not...

When you get a bit older, you start realising why it was that certain countries were allowed to stay 'neutral'. Switzerland: come on down...

Not that England didn't commit any WW2 atrocities. For starters, the fire-bombing of various German civilian populations centres by the RAF, as so graphically described by 'Sven' from the German P.O.V. Thank God all these hard-boiled war-novels aren't considered PC any more or people might start questioning the consensus view of 'history'.
